Trash Tuesday #93: Where Getting it Cheap is Part of the Esthetic
by Pasadena Adjacent
The construction of the Twyla Towers is nearly complete. A few carpeted ledges await installation. In the meantime, we at Pasadena Adjacent are putting in the finishing touches. Color and turf. Which leads the editor to Trash Tuesday #93; a metal double door cabinet used to store chain saws, poisons and other assorted tools of the gardening trade. One of two cabinets Chef King Walter left behind during that “ahem” wee troubled episode he overcame. And what kind of friend would the editor be without taking advantage of the Chef’s misfortune? Using leftover paint mixed with artist oil paints, the cabinet is now the recipient of a Matissian bio-morphic fern forest overhaul. Next? what to paint the walls…
Green. Bold green. Parrot Green. #0780; something to play off the redwood slat fence. And this is where cruising the neighborhood for inspiration comes into play. The building above is a construction company near the corner of Colorado Blvd and Figuroa in Eagle Rock. Besides, it’s time to re-paint the rancho. Something like this might work; but with a China red garage door (this is where Pasadena Adjacent would appreciate you opening the link). Since the Twyla Towers are at the south end of the house, color fastness isn’t an issue. Some chocolate paint for the eves and window seal, 20 bucks for some sod (Twyla loves to gnaw on grass). Maybe a line of left over tile from the Lake Los Angeles project to grace the top layer of cinder block. The girls got it good.
More to come
Our Editor Responds: Twyla is a cat. Refer to Trash Tuesday #92
In the Editor’s neighborhood of Pasadena Adjacent Highland Park, trash collection takes place on a Tuesday. The night before is a good time to canvas the neighborhood for castaways. It’s great sport. We use Tuesday on our blog to post the Editor’s treasures. If we haven’t scored any good curbside finds “Trash Tuesday” becomes “Tag Sale Tuesday” where the phrase “getting it cheap is part of the esthetic” still remains apropos
“Getting it cheap is part of the esthetic” was coined by photographer D Gordon

Is that Pimento, Olde Cimarron, or Tamarillo?
Our Editor Responds: I mixed the colors for the cabinet off of a oil base paint leftover from the bathroom. What I now call Eucalyptus Green. The first layer I painted is a pale yellow. Second layer used Indian Yellow and Cad Orange. Third layer used Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ocher. The Darkest and last layer is a kind of Mars Violet…or are you referring to the house in the link?

Lucky Twyla.
Our Editor Responds: If she were really lucky, she’d be an outdoors cat without bars

I wrote “enjoy” in place of envy. Huh.
Our Editor Responds: Freudian slip? I’d rather be enjoyed then envied

I know that building, but mainly remember it for the purple. Clicked on the link. Nice colors.
Our Editor Responds: Purple… Maybe your thinking of the contrast with the Hop Bushes? Thank you for opening the link. I have a light gray roof like the ranch pictured. I had no idea that would become such a difficult color to work with. Here’s another neighborhood drive by I like on the next street over – http://imagebin.org/244815

Love the Matisse inspired cabinet!
Our Editor Responds: Thanks Vetti, that means a lot

The girl is very lucky! I love it. You are so clever
Our Editor Responds: I’m unable to “quit” making things. If I’m not making “capitol A R T” I make something else.

I LOVE THAT GREEN. You didn’t ask for my opinion, but I wouldn’t put red with it.
Our Editor Responds: Are you thinking of the wall of the Twyla compound (the photo with the cabinet in it – behind the Camilla trees) or the link to the house with the red accents?

That’s dodoneum, isn’t it? I just planted some on the side of my house. I was thinking about putting some chartreuse euphorbia around it. I love the painting on the cabinet doors.
Our Editor Responds: Thanks, Bio-Morphic Matisse. “Dodoneum” – I call them Hopbush and I have several along my fence line. I have a thing for the witchy reds in the arboreal world. Euphorbia would be a great choice.

I’m thinking of the link. I just like the green behind the trees so much.
Our Editor Responds: It’s the idea of that contrasting chinese red that appeals most to me. Shock and awe.

Did you notice that pink flamingo on the right of the linked photo with the red garage door and car? Pretty cool. But nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the Matisse inspired metal cabinets. I’m floored!
Our Editor Responds: You know how it is, like a weaving. You start up with certain intentions and as you raise the bar “here” all the “theres” start to look decrepit. So bit by bit I think everything at rancho-adjacent is getting an overhaul.
I once had pink flamingos that I picked up in TJ. Unfortunately, roadside craftsmanship dictated that concrete and paper machete can be mixed. In time my birds kind of melted.

When I hit it big, you and Mr. V will be immediately contracted to build something similar for our Spencer. Dont clear your calendars just yet, but do keep it in mind. Beautiful!
On another topic, Bauer is my “1st” collection (Catalina would be too, if i coukd get my grubby little hands on any of it!). I have a book that says they were in Lincoln Heights.
Our Editor Responds: I think we could use more “hit it big” people in our lives, but then they wouldn’t appreciate our craft. Didn’t know that about Catalina in Lincoln Heights. That’s where Bauer was. Very close to where the Lacy Street shelter is now. We only have a few pieces (a candlestick holder and some tiles). I do know that a Japanese man (name?) who taught ceramics at Pasadena City College back in the 70’s was a master glazer at Franciscan Pottery.

I have 3 of those ubiquitous metal cabinets but none so nice as your enhanced version. Perhaps they wouldn’t be stuck out in the garage if they looked so good.
I also noticed the pink flamingo but the red caddy really caught my favor. It’s like one the fam drove to LA in 1964…but ours was blend-in beige.
Our Editor Responds: I kind of wish that caddy wasn’t in the photo so I could get a better sense of the color scheme. When is red too much red…
I remember that drive. Your families visit to our San Diego rancho was a big deal – I have yet to get away from the ranch pattern. Brief forays into industrial lofts, clap boards and a spanish style apartment but I always land back in a ranch. I must accept my destiny and it’s attendent baby shit green color palate. (But the Twyla compound is still going to be parrot green.)

Oops. I meant that Bauer was in LH but I didn’t know where. I’d love drive past the building sometime, if it’s still there.
Our Editor Responds: Whose to say that Catalina Swimware started in Catalina – Dr Google
Re Catalaine tile: The clay deposits which were first found by William Wrigley Jr. and David M. Renton prompted the Santa Catalina Island Company to invest in the development of a brick and tile factory. By 1927 the plant was complete and in full operation. Mr. Wrigley decided that manufacturing building materials on the Island would drastically reduce his costs on many of his building projects in Avalon, including the Casino building. The first few years of production were focused on functional building materials, such as bricks and roofing tile. By 1930 Mr. Wrigley and Catalina Clay Products expanded and began producing decorative ware and tile.

I love, love, love the door panels!!! Can I commision some?
Lil’ Twy is one lucky kitty!
Our Editor Replies: Sure! they did come out rather nicely. I had plans on putting in a rust/red colored final layer but am holding back on it. Very hard for me – “excess” has always been a companion of mine. Less is more or more is more? that is the question

Somehow I missed the email so arriving late to the par-tay. I concur with all previous mentioned accolades. I opened the Hiker link but, alas, it isn’t there. I do like the color scheme of the house. the bright green not so much. I do like a splash of color – am about to paint my front door a warm red and the rest of the house is the color of the underside of live oak leaves. I do like a palette, and I’m not talking about my tongue.
Our Editor Responds: I’m not sure I’ll be able to go that dark on the south side in that it’s in the shade and might be too dark. Who knows, I’m a little surprised how expensive exterior paint is compared to interior. Was it always so? 50 bucks a gallon

You get my creative juices flowing, PA, thinking about all the things I’d like to do around this house. But I don’t have your sense of style or color or craftsmanship or talent… so, alas, I’ll just gawk at your artistry.
I opened all the links. Love that photo of Twyla with the hand bathed in sunlight. And I love Houzz! I’m off to explore some more. Thank you for the inspiration.
So when’s the cocktail party so we can all come and enjoy Twyla Towers?
Our Editor Replies: You are the only one who opened that link (wordpress has stats) and wasn’t it worth it? a bit of trimming has since occurred to the tower so It’s in it’s finished state now. The glass blocks did show up in a previous Trash Tuesday, very astute of you, but as background. Now they’re center stage. Mr V is for hire (seriously – he’s taking on handyman jobs; he comes outfitted with my decorative skills). Houzz is evil. The dream is that my patio will finally be in order, my yard will be manageable, the house will be painted and I’ll have a new area rug. Spring? who knows
