Cheese . Wine . Nuts
Our Editor Responds: Former location of Trader Joes
Oh, now I’m dizzy. Love the soundtrack. Kitty looks pensive and curious after she slows down. Did you make her? Is kitty a girl? Reading about Re-run makes me want to go to Highland Park. I haven’t been in ages.
Our Editor Responds: Yes, kitty awaits the first firing. She’s filled with the LA Times (for volume) and resembles a kidney. I think it’s the Rolling Stone’s “She’s so Cold”
It’s “Shattered.” That I knew. It does make for a great soundtrack, but it’s even better with all the ambient sound. There’s a lot going on. Kidney is a good name for a kitty.
So the LA Times goes up in flames right along with her?
Our Editor Responds: The Times wadded into a ball and wrapped in masking tape for the center.
I’m dizzy also. And a little bit afraid, but the spinning base makes me visualize the solar system which always makes me happy. Re Run’s interview makes me happy too.
Our Editor Responds: Re-runs cat lasted about 24 hours. That location is pretty diligent about graffiti removal.
Btw: Fred got to try out his affordable coverage with a heart attack a week ago. 3 hospitals later, 2 stints at UCLA Harbor and a week of living with Ramona and being chauffeur. Twyla too. Shoot me now.
I don’t know about the cat, but I’m dizzy! (nothing new)
Inspiration is where we find it.
Do you have an after firing photo?
Our Editor Responds: Which cat; Re-Run, Kidney Kitty or both? Kitty hasn’t even gone through the first firing yet. She’s kind of thick and they don’t want her exploding in the kiln. Made her about a month ago.
I love Spinny kitty–I see many animals in her:)
Our Editor Responds: Me too. She’s wearing ‘white face.’ And it took great restraint on my part not to give her four white socks.
I’m not really seeing a kidney, but I like the form. All the curves have a nice rhythm, and the cat seems at once original and iconic. Is it big? I’m picturing slightly larger than a rugby ball, but it’s probably more the size of a kidney.
Our Editor Responds: This is a photo of what Kidney Kitty looks like from the top. Even keeping that form was a bit of a struggle as the weight of the clay kept shifting about. I have no idea if the thickness is remotely ‘even’ which is why the drying time is longer then usual. Still no guarantees.
Shrinkage is around 13%. Doesn’t sound like much but you’d be surprised.
Looks/sounds like a typical Friday night around here: music, wine and cheese from Trader Joe’s and plenty of kooky cat antics. Love the coloring and texture of the fur. Reminds me of peanut butter cookies, yum…
Our Editor Responds: If only it had remained a Trader Joes. One of the few that failed. Now it’s split into a laundry matt and the High Ho Market. The kind of market that sells tiny plastic bags and ladies panties (shaped as a rose bud) tucked into what converts into a handy crack pipe.
And don’t forget the nuts, Stickup Artist.
Kitty looks to me like a kitty-shaped chocolate cake, which tells you where I’m at, at the moment.
To be honest I’m not sure how I feel about graffiti in general; If I approve of it for one building does that mean it’s okay if someone spray paints my house? Not. But I like what Re-Run is doing.
Our Editor Responds: I hate graffiti and I didn’t cry a tear when Re-runs contribution to society was whited out in less then 24 hours. But it did resemble Kidney Kitty and that needed to be acknowledged for prosperity. If it’s done on paper and wheat paste, I’m all for it
I love the kitty, especially the white bits. Looking forward to seeing it fired and glazed. How did Twyla enjoy chauffering Ramona around?
Our Editor Responds: Twyla came home with fleas. Stressful week.
I agree, very chocolatey, looking forward to seeing the finished piece.
Sorry to hear about your stressful week but glad there was coverage. I hope there is someone to sing you the Soft Kitty Warm Kitty song.
Our Editor Responds: A walk among the pines would do it for me. The clay body is called Amador. More red then chocolate and gritty. One I thought I’d try to use up on kitty. If it makes it out of the kiln, I’ll probably put a heavy iron oxide on it to allow the original clay to show through while adding a shimmer. A warm buttery glaze on the white parts might be nice. Glaze results are always the most treacherous act of ceramics.
I love when you talk clay and glaze and kiln. I miss being able to throw words around like, “Celadon.”
Our Editor Responds: Knock yourself out – because I know how much you like links
I miss our old view of the Griffith Park Observatory back when we lived in Highland Park. I don’t miss the graffiti, though I might make an exception for cats. Especially your latest creation. It’s devine.
Our Editor Responds: I miss that view too. I bet that section of the hood is far more bucolic then back in ‘the day’
Our Editor Responds: I know – it’s an art thing
Our Editor Responds: Kidney Kitty made it through the first bisque firing and has been given a coat of iron oxide. The engobe areas (white tips) have been glazed with winnower yellow which should blend nicely with the oxide edge.
